President initiates drive to boost the economy

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--President Lee Myung-bak presided over a meeting of the National Competitiveness Council at Cheong Wa Dae this morning from 10:00 to 12:10. The meeting was attended by Chairperson SaKong Il of the Council and 30 other Council members from the Government, business, labor and the civil society.

At today's meeting, the participants engaged in intense discussions on ways to streamline regulations on industrial complexes as the first concrete measure of the Lee Myung-bak Administration to revive the sagging economy. The significance of the first package lies in that it was drafted after taking into full consideration the new Government's philosophy of user-oriented and policy consumer-oriented deregulation. Also taken into account were the new Administration's guiding principles, including the establishment of a Government serving the people and creative pragmatism. The new Government will provide assistance to ensure that the construction of industrial complexes is free of difficulties and inconveniences through supportive, speedy, efficient and predictable approval and permit procedures.

President Jang Seok-chun of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions said, "I already clarified at my inauguration that labor will participate in the campaign to revitalize the economy. It represents a candid expression of labor's willingness to change what it can. Labor is one of the most difficult entities to change. Now that it is willing to change, I hope the nation will see a major transformation. I hope labor-management relations will be enhanced to become as good as any in other advanced countries."

In response, Chairman Cho Suck-rai of the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) said, "What I have just heard is an eye-opening remark. Mr. Jang said that the labor would join in the campaign to revitalize the economy. Labor has never made such remarks before. It goes very well with the FKI's decision this morning to make a declaration concerning its stance. FKI will soon make public its resolution to do its best to fulfill the social responsibilities entrusted with the nation's enterprises." As such, the first meeting of the National Competitiveness Council ended on a positive note, paving the way for faithful pursuit of reconciliation, cooperation and coexistence by both labor and management.
