The president names 26 minister and vice minister-level officials
President Lee Myung-bak today named 26 persons for minister- and vice minister-level posts, including the Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Vice Minister for State Affairs in the Office of the Prime Minister and vice ministers of 15 ministries.
The criteria for the appointments this time focused on whether candidates have a vision and sound views about the nation corresponding to the goals of the Lee Myung-bak Administration, which are the revitalization of economy and creation of a global Korea. In addition, emphasis was placed on putting appropriate talented people with excellent capabilities and abundant experience in the right positions based on creative pragmatism, the Lee Administration’s guiding principle. In particular, as most appointees selected have rich administrative experience, it is expected that they would help stabilize the civil service as soon as possible and encourage public officials to carry out their duties efficiently. We ruled out the past practices of nominating those who do not have relevant work experience under the name of impartial distribution of nominees based on regional or academic backgrounds. Prior to the appointment of the vice ministers, we had in-depth discussions with the ministers-designate. By doing so, we made sure that the ministers and vice ministers in each ministry would be able to work together in close teamwork, thus producing synergy.
In the case of the Ministry of Unification and the Ministry of Environment, it was impossible to have consultations in advance as the ministers have yet to be nominated. We seek your understanding about the inevitability of appointing vice ministers first considering the significance of the organization’s stability and pending issues to be addressed under the newly launched Administration.
There was some criticism that nominees announced so far came from a certain region of the country lopsidedly. But that is not true as people will understand when they see the breakdown of the nominees by region. The criticism seems to stem from an evaluation of a small group of initial nominees. Of the 23 Vice Ministers, four come from Seoul and Gyeonggi-do province, six from the Gyeongsang-do provinces, six from the Chungcheong-do provinces and seven from the Jeolla-do provinces. Unlike the criticism, an overwhelming majority comes from provinces that critics argued have been neglected so far.
Cheong Wa Dae hopes that wasteful political controversies will stop now that the facts are known concerning presidential appointees. We ask for unsparing cooperation from all parties concerned so that the new Administration would be able to start quickly working on economic recovery, particularly the sectors related with the everyday lives of the people. The Government eagerly hopes to serve the people in a stable atmosphere.
