GM Daewoo: A model of cooperation

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) welcomed GM Daewoo's recent decision to rehire former workers laid off in 2001. Minister Chung Sye Kyun hailed the move as a model of successful cooperation between management and the labor union.

Minister Chung visited the GM Daewoo facility in Bupyung, near Incheon (a port city just west of Seoul) on March 23. During a tour of the automobile plant, Chung praised both management and the union for spearheading efforts to transform "what was a troubling situation four years ago into a source of pride now." He hoped that such cooperation would have an impact not only in the automobile sector but also other areas of Korean industry.

GM Daewoo, the General Motors Corp.'s Korean unit, announced on March 16 that it will rehire 1,700 employees by the end of this month. The workers had been laid off during restructuring efforts in 2001. It is the first time in Korea that a company made a move to rehire former workers who had been laid off.

The decision came as the company earned 64.7 billion won in net profits in 2005. The company sold 647,000 cars last year, up from 294,000 cars in 2002.

In February 2001, GM Daewoo dismissed 30% of the workforce at the Bupyung plant. At the time, management had promised they would rehire all the laid-off workers once the company regained its footing.
