Car fuel efficiency improved last year

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The fuel efficiency of vehicles sold in Korea improved by an average 1.8% in 2005 compared to the previous year, according to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.

For Koreans, the 1.8% increase in fuel efficiency amounts to a savings of approximately 30.6 billion won in fuel costs.

From 1998 to 2003, fuel efficiency of cars was on the decline as consumers favored larger vehicles and those with automatic transmission. However, the fuel efficiency has improved for the past two years, helped by the adoption of advanced fuel-efficient technologies by carmakers to upgrade their existing models. The car mileage climbed to an average 10.69 kilometers per liter in 2005, up from 10.50 kilometers per liter in 2004.

Furthermore, Korean auto makers have released more fuel-efficient models in reaction to consumer demands to get more mileage out of each tank of gas. Those models have already been on the nation’s best-selling lists. Hyundai Sonata NF, whose mileage (10.7 kilometers a liter) is higher than the previous model Sonata EF (9.4 kilometers a liter), topped the list in 2005.
