Promoting an investment-friendly environment

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--With an aim of attracting USD$11 billion in foreign investment this year, the Korean government will concentrate on improving the business environment and living conditions for foreign investors.

At a meeting on March 20 with CEOs of foreign companies in Korea, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy Chung Sye Kyun emphasized the important role investment plays in the nation’s growth. Korea hopes to achieve 5% economic growth and create 400,000 new jobs this year.

Efforts to foster an investment-friendly climate include a proposal to help more companies become eligible for cash incentives granted to R&D centers, and to build foreign investment zones in the nation’s underdeveloped areas. The government is also working with insurance companies to develop specialized medical insurance policies for foreign workers in the first half of the year. (Foreign workers already have access to the national health insurance plan in the same way as Koreans.)

This October, Invest Korea Plaza will open in Seoul to help foreigners better adjust to life in Korea. The Plaza will house education centers to provide various programs for families and their children as well as cultural activities. Also, a multi-lingual call center will be built within the Plaza to assist with difficulties faced by foreigners.

In attendance at the meeting were government officials, CEOs from foreign-invested companies, and representatives from foreign chambers of commerce in Korea.
