Retail figures for May

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--According to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE), sales at Korea's major department stores rose by 7.6% year-on-year in May of 2006. Major discount outlets also saw their year-on-year sales increase by 2.6%.

Strong performance at department stores last month was aided by seasonal demand for summer clothing as well as increasing sales of luxury goods. Sales were strong in luxury goods (20.7%) and men's apparel (6.7%). The number of customers purchasing at department stores was down by 1.7% in May. The actual value of purchase per customer increased by 6.9% to 62,600 won from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, sales at discount outlets were up in home and living goods (7.4%), food (2.8%), and sporting goods (1.8%). The number of customers increased by 0.9% while the actual value of purchase per customer grew by 1.6% to 41,735 won.

The major department stores surveyed are Hyundai, Lotte, and Shinsegae. The discount stores in the survey are E-Mart, Lotte Mart, and Samsung Tesco Homeplus.
