KT and Samsung to Collaborate on Marketing New Green IT System
The two companies are seeking to encourage the global IT industry to use more energy-efficient cloud computing systems. Combining KT’s new cloud computing system (ucloud) and Samsung’s leading-edge 30nm class* DDR3, the new green IT system is expected to offer substantial energy savings.
“This collaboration represents a critical step in extending our ‘Green Memory’ initiative, which has been very well received by global PC and server businesses,” said Wanhoon Hong, executive vice president, memory sales & marketing at Samsung Electronics. “Together with our new partner, Samsung will expand its green marketing activities to create more business opportunities for energy-efficient server systems within the worldwide server market.”
“KT’s cloud system will benefit its users greatly by accommodating sharply increasing data traffic and offering a more cost-competitive solution thanks to its power-saving benefits,” said Jung Hee Song, Senior Executive Vice President, Service Innovation Group at KT. “With this newly developed collaborative green IT solution, we will be able to conduct our cloud computing system business more aggressively.”
KT built a cloud data center (CDC) in Cheonan, Korea last year and is investing approximately 200 billion Korean Won (approximately US$ 170 million) to establish a comprehensive cloud computing system tied to the center. KT’s cloud computing system is well-known for its high stability, security and convenience at a low price.
The new cloud computing system is expected to deliver approximately two to three times greater electrical energy efficiency than previous server systems and with Samsung’s green DDR3, can save more than 70 percent power compared to previous systems.
Establishing a cloud data center with 1,000 server racks using KT’s new system and Samsung green memory will save approximately 12 billion Korean Won (approximately US$ 10 milion) on average in any given year. This also equates to reducing 70,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to eliminating day-long carbon dioxide emissions from roughly 4.8 million cars. It would require 1.6 million 10-year-old trees to absorb that amount of carbon dioxide.
The two companies are expecting to make a significant contribution to raising global interest in the growth of a more environment-friendly IT industry.
The companies will also work together to create market opportunities for the new green IT system through their participation in ‘Samsung Semiconductor CIO (Chief Information Officer) Forum’ that will be held this year in six countries including the U.S., Japan and Korea.
